The newly elected President Volodymyr Zelensky is being sworn in today.

After winning the election in 2019, Volodymyr Zelensky became Ukraine's sixth president. In the second round, April 21, 73.22% voted for him, while Petro Poroshenko was supported by 24.45% of the Ukrainians.

Events between election and inauguration

On April 22, thousands of people came to Bankova Street to support and thank the current President of Ukraine. Petro Poroshenko said earlier, and during the meeting he confirmed, that he would leave the post the following month, but he will not leave politics.

On April 24, Putin signed a simplified procedure decree to obtain Russian citizenship for occupants of the occupied territories of Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

On May 16, after lengthy discussions, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine finally decided the date of the inauguration of Volodymyr Zelensky for May 20. According to Ukraine's constitution, the newly elected president must take the post within 30 days from the official announcement of the election result.

Inauguration rules

The swearing in is held in the parliament hall. The inauguration is broadcasted live on national channels. At the beginning of the inauguration, Ukraine's anthem is played, and subsequently the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada announces those present. The chairman of the Central Election Commission (CVK) then announces the election result.

The President of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine takes the oath of Ukraine's president. The newly elected president puts his hand on the Constitution and, if he so wishes, on the Gospel and swears loyalty to the Ukrainian people, signs the text and gives it to the President of the Constitutional Court. He announces that the newly elected president has joined the position of head of state, and the head of the Central Election Commission passes the credentials to the President of Ukraine.

Official symbols of power are also given to the new president - a standard, a sign of presidential dignity, an official stamp and a spiked mace, and he himself must turn to the Ukrainians from the Verkhovna Rada's rostrum. The ceremony concludes with Ukraine's national anthem.

Then Volodymyr Zelensky will officially take the position of the country's president.
